Sold versus asking prices: a practical used-market guide

A sold price and a current asking price are different evidence when you research a used item. Learn how to keep them separate.

The label attached to a number changes what that number can support.

Sold price

A price that can be tied to a completed transaction. It is more useful for a buy comparison when model, condition, and accessories are close.

Asking price

The seller's requested price. The item may not sell at that amount, so it is not proof of a future sale.

Unknown or unsold

A hidden Best Offer amount, an ended-unsold listing, a starting bid, or an aggregate result. Treat it as context, not calculation evidence.

Keep this in mind

When sold evidence is sparse, the honest conclusion is that the evidence is insufficient. Do not call a resale profitable from asking prices alone.
